Process and partnership

The $40,000 Fair Trust Art Prize is funded by the Eileen Fair Charitable Trust and delivered in partnership with Te Manawa Museum of Art, Science and Heritage. Through this collaboration, Te Manawa provides Prize recipients space and support and an avenue to connect with the local community.
Selection process
Entry to the Fair Trust Art Prize is by invitation. This allows the Eileen Fair Charitable Trust to work with Te Manawa to design an enduring Prize that will benefit the Manawatū arts sector for years to come.
Selection of artists is guided by an Assessment Panel, who make recommendations for the recipient of the Fair Trust Art Prize to the Trust. The Assessment Panel is comprised of two guest panelists with experience and esteem in the national arts sector, and Sian van Dyk, Senior Manager, Curatorial and Collections at Te Manawa.
Candidates for the Prize are evaluated against the following criteria:
- Conceptual approach and interests
- Visual communication / aesthetic
- Te Manawa art collection relevance
- Environmental sustainability
- Education / experience / place in their career
- Time management / work ethic.
Selected artists need to be sufficiently experienced to develop and produce a major solo exhibition.
Sian van Dyk works alongside selected artists as they develop their project proposal and body of work.
